The NSW Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) is one of Australia's most iconic flowers. You'll often find it on stamps, tea towels or belts. Just goes to show how much we love this gorgeous flower!
Fun fact: before golden wattles became the national floral emblem of the country, Waratah was the main rival for the title. And it was a heated battle, too - it involved debates in newspapers and committee meetings!
It was a close call, but Waratah lost. Why? Because it was an east coast only plant, whereas wattle was spread across the mainland.
National emblem or not, it sure wins the popularity prize!
