Meet Elder Bruno of the Nyul Nyul community, traditional custodian of the land. Our team was fortunate to spend time on country with him last week as he shared his traditional knowledge of bushfoods.
This year’s NAIDOC theme is an opportunity to recognise and honour the First Nations that have inhabited and taken care of this continent for more than 65.000 years.
Australia’s history begins with the footprints left by the continent’s first explorers. It continues with the hundreds of Nations and cultures that spread across the land, caring for it and turning it into a land of bounty.
Aboriginal people were in contact with other cultures long before European occupation in 1788. They shared ideas and skills, with Macassans, Melanesians, Dutch, Portuguese navigators and traders.
At the time of European occupation, there were over 700 different Indigenous Aboriginal languages and dialects spoken in Australia. Now there are less than 250 still in use.
It is vital for this ancient culture to be celebrated and cultivated, not only for the Indigenous communities but for the Australian cultural heritage we share.
