It's National Corn Chip Day 🎉 Ever wonder why your dog's paws sometimes smell like Fritos?
The smell is caused by a bacteria called Proteus, commonly found on the skin of dogs. Proteus produces a compound called putrescine which smells similar to corn chips. Since the bacteria seeks out moist environments it can end up growing on your dog's paws.
Some breeds with skin folds, like bulldogs, pugs, and Shar Peis, are more prone to this bacteria build up, as are dogs with heavy coats.
The Frito paw smell may be an indication of a yeast or fungal infections. To prevent yeast infections keep nails clipped, and wash and dry paws thoroughly after outdoor activities. If the smell persists talk with your veterinarian for treatments.
