Hi! It’s Salima - Founder of SAMARA. This is so surreal for me, and our team is so excited to announce our most meaningful launch yet. As you may know, SAMARA was born three years ago and one of the biggest reasons it exists is because I wanted to find a way to keep The Soular Backpack alive. You see, my sister Samara and I grew up in Kenya and while I was growing up there, I realized how a lot of children my age didn’t have access to electricity, which meant that they would rely on this thing called kerosene so that they could do their homework every night. Kerosene, is a carcinogenic jet fuel that 1.2 billion people rely on as their only source of light after dusk, and families living under $1 a day spend 25% of their income on this. This would impact a child’s education, their health and their futures.
6 years ago, when I was 22, I decided I wanted to do something about this, and created The Soular Backpack, which is essentially a backpack with a solar panel on it that enables children to do their homework with clean, safe light every night. 3 years ago, I started SAMARA so we could find a way to sustainably keep Soular going, and so we could create as much impact in the world as possible. If you’ve purchased anything from SAMARA, you have contributed towards providing thousands of children with access to light.
