To everyone in Southern California: You live next to the biggest nuclear waste storage site in the country. The federal government promised that they would provide a final resting place for this toxic stuff, but they haven’t yet so it’s sitting here on our beach “temporarily.” The newest draft EIR says that the permit for the storage site and the possible relocation of the spent fuel won’t be readdressed until 2035!
@sce, @coastalcommission, and the California State Lands Commission are are relying on the possibility of sloppy bill passing the senate which would bypass regular environmental regulations, and ship nuclear waste across the country on trains and trucks through San Diego or OC and LA and into low income communities in Texas and New Mexico—a classic case of environmental racism. It would be managed by private companies with long histories of pollution and mismanagement. After sitting there for and indefinite amount of time, it would then have to be shipped across the country again to a national nuclear waste repository once one is located and constructed. We don’t even have the designs to safely ship it across the country yet.

I am suggesting another option that is really the only safe, ethical choice we have. Let’s move it off the beach and across the freeway to a more secure location where it can be stored in a reinforced indoor facility in which canisters can be monitored, inspected and repaired—until a geologically suitable national repository is located. The Marines can better protect it if its located further east, and it will be less visible to outsiders. The Marines & the Navy argue that they don’t want it on their land, but technically it already is on their land, and in the least defensible part of it.

Please come to the Public Hearing on the Draft EIR next Tuesday August 7th in Oceanside or Wednesday August 8th in San Clemente to voice your opposition to the current plan,and suggest a better alternative.
