“For me, International Women’s Day is a reminder to be grateful to be amongst the freest women ever to walk our planet. It’s a day to gaze backward and to thank our lucky stars for our foremothers who sacrificed so much for our mere existence and charges me to exercise the liberties they’ve gifted to me: to vote, to bring great dreams to fruition, to choose whether to bring forth new life, or not, to use my voice and make it heard. It’s also a day to glimpse forward. To honor how far our cultures have come in righting the gender-based discriminations our foremothers weathered, while also recognizing our sisters who have yet to be extended our newfound freedoms. It’s our duty to extend our hands, our lives, to lift up those who still feel the bonds of oppression based on race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. Oppression anywhere means oppression can flourish everywhere. For me, the great gift of International Women’s Day is as a re-centering point each year. It’s a reminder that we have the abilities and freedoms to define womanhood as we feel it and live it in this magical, watery world that nourishes us. And we can only move forward together.” - @theseakin What does International Women’s Day mean to you? #internationalwomensday
