The heart of the wave, the pocket, the power source... Unless you're surfing a perfect point break, chances are you're going to have to 'redirect' in order to stay in the powerful part of the wave. For nose riding, being in the pocket is seen as the most critical, because it is the fastest, steepest part of the wave. If you feel like you are always losing speed out on the shoulder of a wave, think about engaging your outside rail and turning back towards the white water. The steepest part of waves will look different, shades darker from flatter sections. These light reflections are the language of the waves that experienced surfers spend countless hours learning.
