Cross stepping is the most essential element in longboarding. In order to move around the board, cross-stepping allows for smooth, fast movement that enables noseriding in the pocket. While it looks like walking, there’s a hidden technique in cross-stepping that involves pushing the board under the feet. By pushing down with the feet and sweeping (shoving) the board with the cross-step motion under you, balance is more engaged on the board and therefore easier to control. If you’re learning to cross-step, I suggest first practice taking one step forward and one step back, to find the rhythm and balance needed to work your way further up towards the nose! Stepping back is just as important as forward because we have to be toward the back of the board in order to turn it. ... What’s the next-level surf maneuver you want to learn?
