“As a kid, I remember learning how to surf at San Onofre right next to the twin nuclear reactor domes. My family has three generations of surfing history at San Onofre, so it always felt like home there. We didn’t worry much about the plant.
When I was 19, I learned that the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station had shut down after a leak in 2012, and that now the waste was essentially stranded there, beachfront. I ended up getting really involved in the issue and becoming a big advocate for locally relocating it to higher ground until there is a national repository to send it to.
Recently, Congresswoman & Presidential Candidate Tulsi Gabbard (@tulsigabbard) reached out to me about shining a light on the issue. She came down to SanO to celebrate her birthday and learn about the issue. We got some waves together in front of the plant and talked policy under the beach shack.
A lot of people don’t know about this issue yet, but it affects all of us. We really need to come together as a nation to find real solutions for safe nuclear waste storage.
