“Fins are a complex world to say the least. Some influence has come from bird wings and boat rudders. They can play a major role in the board’s ‘feel’ and tiny adjustments can sometimes bring a board to its magic state. While shape, flex and placement may seem simple, the endless combinations make a lifetime of exploration.
For singlefins, I usually like fins that are close to the boards length ... so if the board in 7 feet I like a 7 inch fin.
I gravitate towards fins with a wider base, and more straight up, but personal preference is ours to make!
For a log, I like bigger fins, like the greenough here in this photo, If the board is around 9’6 I’d ride a 10.5” fin, if the board is smaller, maybe test the 10”
I like a bit wider base in my fin,
With a little bit of flex in the tip, around 10.25” usually suits well.
