#SeeaTipTimeTuesday “Timing is everything”. Riding a longboard makes us look at waves totally different than if we are on a midlength or shorter board. The way we “see the wave” changes with each type of surf craft because the speed, placement, turns, everything changes with how we approach a wave. For longboarding, the ideal maneuver is finding the noseride, but as we’re all aware, not every wave has a section to noseride. Identifying the section, anticipating the section, this is where a good noseride is made (even before you start cross stepping, you identify the part of the wave where you want to be on the nose). But not every wave has those nose friendly sections, so there’s always time to learn ways to move our feet around. I’ve become transfixed with learning how to ride backwards and switch stance as a way to broaden my surfing, and to keep the element of spice and challenge alive! With these moves too, timing is everything. Listening to the wave, anticipating the way it’s going to move, then making split second decisions on how to move with it, these are the momentary choices that make up a surfers ride. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My mom always gave me great advice for longboarding in events, she says, “slow motion Leah”. And she’s right, even if we’re making quick foot adjustments, it’s been helpful for me to tell myself while riding, slow down, take your time, move when the wave tells you too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is why surfing is a wonderful form of self-expression!
