In “Sea Us Now” we reimagine our relationship with an open coastline and the sea. Seen through the lens of African American filmmaker Bethany Mollenkof, we pay homage to the style and grace of black beach culture in the 50s-60s, married with the art of wave riding.
We abandon unrealistic standards of beauty that many women often felt obligated to adhere to at that time. Acknowledging that this departure brings us closer to achieving our full potential as water women. We glorify our natural hair, glowing melanin, and the curve infigures. As we are now.
We challenge the viewer to examine a historical narrative that is often reflected upon with nostalgia, and question who is unseen or absent. We hope that this films serves as an inspirational piece to future generations.
