Step Back and Turn - @shredsista has one of the best turns in the game. Here you can see her utilizing a technique coming straight out of a cross step into the turn. For a good, powerful turn, the goal is to get the board on its rail. On a longboard, this means the back foot has to be close to the tail. We have most speed while riding in the middle or front of the board, so this is where the back-step-to-turn technique allows the surfer to carry the speed into the turn. Work on getting comfortable with your cross-step back. Work on spacing your steps, so that your back foot lands close to the the tail (ideally close to where your fin is), and usually close to the inside rail. As you find your foot placement, put your weight into your bacukfoot, open your shoulders, and allow your hips and shoulders work together to guide the turn. Watch these turns by Makala, and play close attention to her foot placement. Remember, a good turn has speed, so gain your speed, trust your feet, and go for the turn!” Words by @leahloves Video by @jack_colemang
