Leah Dawson: Swing Fade Bottom Turn ~ take notice of the way Eva uses her pop-up to bottom turn ‘swing’ with her board. Longboards have a bit of weight, so projected effectively, they can gain momentum quickly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To project on your bottom turn like this, fade your drop in (fade- if wave is a right, angle your board towards the left as you paddle into the wave), then push through your backfoot, (like pushing into the ground). The harder you push with backfoot and the further back and towards the inside rail foot placement is, will determine how fast and sharp the bottom turn will be.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tip for fade: if the wave is steep ahead of you, it likely won’t need a fade. If you’re on the shoulder paddling in, you can paddle towards the whitewater and fade into the wave to get more speed.
Fades are often used on longboards to set up for noserides at the beginning of a wave as it begins to break.
