Center of Balance - on this wave, Mele exemplifies a perfect center of balance with her board. With an upright posture, she keeps her weight centered through the board, while keeping her upper body calm and quiet.
She’s able to perform quick footwork with this upright posture, because she’s able to maintain her center of balance over the board.
Sometimes, we can bend at the waist and tilt our hips in a way that prohibits full range of motion. By keeping an upright posture through the hips, we are able to control our center of balance more.
Notice how Mele places her feet in order to direct and balance the board. Throughout the ride, she is always keeping her center of balance over the board. The finer details of the technical skills involved in her fin-first take off come with lots of visual study, supreme center of balance, timing of footwork, and of course, going for it.
We will address the fins-first takeoff more in the future!
