Fade takeoff ~ watch @mele_saili perfectly set up her noseride with this fade takeoff. If she had paddled straight into the section without fading, she would have had too much speed through the noseride section of the wave, so in order to place her board in the ideal spot with the right amount of speed, she aims her board to the left as she takes off, and then swoops a quick bottom turn as she pops up. With extra weight on her back foot, she’s able to control the speed of the board. In this instance, she stalls the board in order to set the pace for the noseride by making the swift bottom turn, then immediately transferring weight into her front foot to begin her cross steps to the nose.
Only use a fade if the wave isn’t racing down the line. If the wave is super fast down the line, fading may make you miss the section. But on a slower wave like this, the fade is an essential maneuver in setting up a great noseride.
Also, pay attention to Mele’s quiet arms, much harder to do than it looks, but definitely a style point to strive for!
