The Kick Out ~
One of the more important maneuvers in surfing. A good kick out comes in handy, especially when waves ‘close out’ (a close out is when the section of the wave in front of you breaks without any path to stay on the green face of the wave - also when the whole wave breaks at once aka not a ‘peeler’). The kick out looks simple, and once you learn it and practice it, it will be easy to do!
These particular tips apply to kicking out while going frontside.
Watch how Rosie identifies the section coming towards her. The wave face stretches too far in front of her to make it around the section, so before the wave totally closes out on her, she moves towards the tail of the board. She then presses extra hard through her back foot on the inside rail, leaning back with her body. Most importantly, you want to make sure that you get your nose to pick up over the wave. If you don’t press hard enough with your back foot, the nose of the board (especially on a longboard) may not make it up and over the breaking wave, and the board can easily get swept back into the wave.
The goal is to sink the tail so the nose comes up, as you turn the board on the rail.
⚠️Be ready to catch the board with your hands⚠️ This is a very important element to the kick out, as failure to catch your board can result in a board to the face.
As the board comes up with you pressing your back foot on the inside rail, you then lean forward as you catch your board, to meet your stomach onto the board and transition ideally straight into a paddle!
