As you’ll see here, Rosie is able to get into the wave with zero paddle strokes, but how? First, positioning must be perfect, if you’re too far out, you won’t generate enough speed to get into the wave. Second, you utilize the buoyancy of the surfboard and pull the tail down into the oncoming wave- also called a bump- this technique utilizes the speed and steepness of the wave to generate speed on the board. Third, the timing must be perfect- too soon and you won’t gain the momentum from wave, too late and the wave will break on you, or get too steep and cause the nose to pearl. The bump take off can also be utilized with paddles in order to catch the wave if more speed is needed. Often in steep waves, and on shortboards, surfers will Often use this technique for late, critical drops. Rosie’s on a roll at the @mexilogfest keep putting on a show!!!
