#SeeaTipTimeTuesday Center of balance ~ finding our center balance on a surfboard can be practiced on land as well. A typical surf stance has the backfoot as the turning power and the front foot more as steering stability. In order to find your balance within that, you want to find your center weight slightly towards the backfoot (not centered, not forward, and not totally over the backfoot- a happy medium between center and the backfoot) If you lean too far forward, it becomes difficult to turn the board, as that comes from putting pressure into the tail of the board. If you lean too far back, you loose momentum and can fall back easily with the motion of the wave. Of course, there are moments where we shift weight forward and backwards, but our primary stance remains balanced with the described weight distribution. Practice your surf stance on land! imagine you’re on a wave, and play around with your stance, where your center of balance is, the angle that you position your feet ~ Each angle makes a difference! Open your front hip up, try not to have your front foot perpendicular with the rail—this will close your hips off and make you have to twist in the back and shoulders more.
