Push through turns ~ with any turn, whether it’s a bottom turn, carve, redirect, or even a pump, in order to generate speed through it, push into the board with your feet ( your back foot mostly). Picture yourself doing a squat with weight, that same motion of pushing into your legs and feet, is what makes power and speed through turns on a surfboard.
Learning the balance between how much pressure to initiate through each leg is part of the learning curve, as more energy is required in the back foot push than the front. Foot placement on the board indeed plays a role as well!
When we push on the board, we are engaging the rail and pushing it into the wave to generate speed.
Whether a shortboard, longboard or anything in between, the combo of the foot placement and pushing through turns is key to getting the board on rail, and therefore towards an ideal turn.
For this steeper wave, I chose to ride a 5’11 step up thruster my friend Andy Gordon made to get a quicker response on the steep takeoff.
