🚀 Speed Jive 🚀
On a wave shape like a point break (where the movement of the wave is one directional) making speed down the line becomes a fun tool to ensure making the section in front of you.
Technically, it is most difficult to ride the wave right at the heart of it, in the pocket. To do so, the surfer has to learn how to match the speed of the wave, to turn, to brake or speed up when necessary.
Here, notice how @shredsista moves 2 steps to the middle to glide, then 2 steps back to redirect and turn the board. The wave at first, is not breaking quickly down the line, so Makala limits her speed to wait for the wave to stand up more.
Notice her one big bottom turn, and the speed generated from it. This is done by pressing hard through her back leg and onto the inside toe rail. This turns the board onto the rail, and drives it up the face.
Makala’s stylish hand jive with the turn accentuates the energetic motion up the face of the wave.
Jives can come from our hips, knees, hands, or as one bodily motion, imagine it like a dance move on land! Quick motions of sway and movement can create energy and flow in a certain direction. In surfing, it’s a dynamic, moving floor to sway and adjust energy with.
Remember- the turns start with foot placement on the board, one the feet are in the right place. Watch footage closely for footwork and study where and how often people are making foot adjustments and how it affects their speed!
