Pockets for life! In honor of our Seea babes competing in the MexiLogFest and Duct Tape Invitational this week, we are celebrating the pocket - the part of the wave where the magic is made!
Here, we see @rosiejaffurs brilliantly finding the pocket of this small wave. The pocket is where the wave is about to break, often the steepest part of the wave. I like to call this the heart of the wave ♥️🌊
Especially on smaller waves, it is essential to stay close to the pocket in order to do maneuvers like a noseride or a cutback. Here we see Rosie make a quick move towards the nose from the takeoff, because she sees the pocket of the wave forming in front of here. As she steps back from the noseride, she redirects her board with a cutback in order to place herself back in the pocket as the wave reforms.
Learning to surf, and increase our skill set, is predominately learning the ocean, and predicting the way a wave is going to move.
If you find yourself way out on the shoulder of a wave and losing all your speed, you’re likely missing the cutback element to keep you close to the pocket!!
Pay attention to the directional changes surfers make in these videos as well - keep this in mind while you’re surfing!
