🤙Merry’s signature fade ~ a fade is when you take off angled in the opposite direction from where you’re going, giving the board extra speed to start the wave, but also helping to position the surfer in the optimal part of the wave.
A fade can be used when the wave is slow, or if you’re out in the shoulder of a wave and you need to generate speed with your drop in.
Here, Merry does her signature backside fade. She takes off as if she’s going left, but as she stands up she does a cool drop knee bottom turn, which swings the board into great momentum with the wave. It’s the same as doing a bottom turn, just the radius of the turn is much longer and therefore able to generate good speed!
If the wave is fast down the line, a fade takeoff is not optimal. Utilize this fade on slower waves with bigger boards!
