Angle your takeoff!
When a steep wave comes, especially when we are riding a longer board, it is very helpful to “angle your takeoff” meaning don’t paddle straight into the wave, paddle towards the way you want to go. Here, Hallie does an extreme angle because the wave gets very steep. If she were to have gone straight in the take off, there’s a strong likelihood to pearl (nose going into the water). By angling, she makes the takeoff less steep, but also gets her energy going down the line quickly.
Here, because it’s such a late takeoff, she uses her inside leg to stabilize, stalling her takeoff with her knees in a cobra to table top type maneuver. She then stands up once the board stabilizes from the drop.
Angle your takeoff, but not too much! There’s a sweet spot for every wave. If you have to paddle really hard to catch it, chances are you won’t have to angle. But if the wave is steep, then aim down the line a bit!!
