#tiptimetuesday The goal of riding a longboard is to use the whole board, from tip to tail by utilizing cross walking to take us back and forth. The turning dynamics on a longboard opposed to a shortboard or smaller board are different because we can utilize our steps to initiate our turns.
Draw your attention to when the surfer is coming back from the nose ride. Notice how she cross steps back all the way to the tail, and her last step back with her back foot pushes right into the turn. We can utilize the pressure of our body weight with the cross step to create the turnā when the last cross-step back is placed, it is important to place the back foot in the right place on the tail of the board to turn the way you want to go. Remember, on a longboard (because the board is wider than your feet), our foot placement for turns needs to be closer to which ever rail we are wanting to turn on. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!
Turning the longboard will become much easier if the bodyweight and gravity is utilized correctly with the cross step. Turning a board is about pushing our strength into the board and the rail, so it actually becomes easier to turn the board when we use the inertia of our body weight re-engaging with the board from the cross step.
Remember, cross-stepping backwards is just as- or even more so important than cross-stepping forward. So practice your cross-steps back to the tail to turn and youāll be amazed at how much more control you have over turning your board!
