Something is bound to go wrong at Unbound. It’s part of the race. I’m not going to say I had a hiccup-free day because there were definitely a few out there but for the first time I avoided the major ones, namely flat tires and blowing up.
Some of this is luck, but a good percentage is preparation. To avoid blowing up the pacing strategy was key but nutrition also played a huge part as well. My nutrition strategy was simple: 2 scoops of flowformulas drink mix per bottle with roughly 10 bottles consumed and gels to supplement the remaining calories. About 1 to 2 gels per hour depending on how fast I was going through bottles.
Avoiding flats was a matter of taking it easy on rough descents even when I could go faster, constantly monitoring for sharp rocks, and silca_velo Ultimate Tire Sealant. If you can inject your sealant through your valve it’s not going to seal a valve-sized hole.
