In my career I got a lot of things wrong, but I got one thing right. When I was interviewing as an entry-level person, the interviewer would always ask me, “What are you looking for?” My answer was always, “I’m looking for a mentor.”
Here's my 3 criteria for mentorship:
1. A good mentor will always have time for you.
2. They are never assigned, they are always volunteered.
3. Building a mentor relationship is like building a friendship—it develops over time. Both people need to invest in the relationship, because believe it or not, both people are learning from it.
