New Recipe Spotlight! The Brewer -Hi, I'm Caleb! I was given a Mr Beer Kit 15 years ago. After I went through the process that first time, and it made something that resembled beer, I was very intrigued. My second batch I moved to an all-grain kit which was much better and I was hooked. By my third batch I was making my own recipes and started getting creative. -As a doctor, I enjoy the science of brewing. I try to learn what is happening and why through every step of the brew. I like to utilize new products and new methods to get the best results possible. -I have grown quite a bit as a brewer since my Mr Beer days. Now I use a 20- gallon Spike Solo and can dial in all variables on a Brew Day that I feel the beer needs. If I ever go bigger, I will be getting the Spike Nano. The Beer -The beer name, Heavy Resin, lets you know that you are about to experience a beer dripping in tropical gooeyness from beginning to end! -The huge tropical flavors come from both the hops and yeast. It is light in color and has a very appealing haze. The mouth feel is creamy, soft and fluffy. The aroma hits you even before the glass gets to your mouth. The taste….well you will have to try it for yourself! The Why -The water itself and water chemistry are vital to make this beer properly. Use filtered water and get the water parameters close to these Ca 113, Chloride 213 and Sulfate 68. -Mash hopping with Saaz (or Cascade) will add thiol precursors for the Cosmic Punch to convert giving a huge boost of tropical flavor/aroma. Mash pH should be 5.2-5.3 for this beer. -Dry hopping with Bru-1 has been shown to improve haze stability as well as imparting some beautiful pineapple notes. @psychdocbrewery
