It’s that time again when Australia Day rears it’s head on our calendar and brings up a multitude of emotions for people across this great land. This day is also known as Invasion Day, Survival Day, Australian Native Association Day and the National Day of Mourning.
We’ve never actually celebrated the day here at SF seeing as we always feel gratitude for this incredible country we live on and, more importantly, out of respect for those who do not acknowledge the day. However, we appreciate the opportunity this day presents to further educate ourselves and come to terms with the history of how this colonial nation was formed. As Australians we find that one of the healthiest steps forward is to, on this day, and hopefully forever going forward, remember, research, read about and hear from the indigenous mob all the deep, dark, gritty, harrowing tales of how this land was conquered under the illegal English declaration that Australia was ‘terra nullius’ and therefore able to be taken, a claim that was overturned by the Supreme Court in the Native Title claim initiated by Eddie Koiki Mabo. The victors write the history books, and so on this day we find it important to set your conviction towards learning the true ways of the original people of Australia, integrate them further into life and society any way that is in your power, and contribute to supporting their cultures, which have been under constant attempts of destruction, to be cultivated and integrated.
