🎠Emotions in Chinese medicine are experienced differently than in the West. Here, we seek happiness, looking for joy and delight and excitement. In Chinese medicine, this over emphasis on ‘positive’ emotions is damaging to our health. Not because we should avoid positive emotions but rather for the effect they have on our Qi and our breath. Pay attention next time you’re truly stoked. Your breath changes, you lose the slow, nourishing, deep breath that creates wellbeing and ease. Same thing when you’re really sad, or angry, or anxious, or afraid. Your breath shifts, you lose energy and your body experiences shifts that can cause tension and blockages in the flow of energy. Breathing helps us to release and repattern. Focus on a deep breath that fills the chest and spreads the bottom ribs, moving into the belly. This diaphragmatic breath will massage the inner body and transform your state of mind, making it easier to rest in an easy state of equilibrium. It’s not that we want to avoid emotions, good or bad, but we tend to overemphasis them and perpetuate and feed them, creating more and more imbalance. Think your hyperactive friend who is ALWAYS happy, or your friend with tendency to wallow in their despair. The breath is the place to turn to remember your inner stillness. Sure, tonic herbs help move energy, enliven Lung energy, create the shifts and open us up for transformation to occur, but the foundations of all ancient forms of healing are the breath. And guys, it’s free! — @tahneemccrossin
