It's not uncommon to find the flavour of some tonic herbs challenging, especially if you are new to using them (we’ve all been there - Ashwagandha and Schizandra ... we’re looking at you!)
In Chinese medicine, foods (including herbs) are divided into five flavours; bitter, sour, sweet, salty and spicy. Chinese medicine specifies that each of the five flavours is connected to one of the body’s five major organ systems. For example:
Heart – Bitter
Liver – Sour
Spleen – Sweet
Kidney – Salty
Lung – Spicy
It’s important to observe which of the five flavours you find yourself really struggling with, as this will allow you to understand which organ system/s may need additional support.
Which flavours does your body love, or loathe?!
