Cold plunging in wild waters is one of the ultimate ways to invigorate the body. It teaches you to become adaptable, how to cultivate Qi transformation to heat and regulate the body, and how to stay calm in the face of very uncomfortable feelings. There’s a way to do it intelligently however. Only get as cold as your body can warm back up easily after. Do not invite the cold in if you have trouble warming up your centre, organs and bones. Ease into the practice, and help your body after with warming herbs, tea and movement. Breathing before is nice, but remember that an excess of Yang, aggressive breathing should be balanced with lots of Yin breath practice and calming of the mind (otherwise the healing practice will become excessive and age you). Harmony is key. Stay in touch with your body, your evolving reasons for taking the plunge, or to not plunge on a particular day.
Best way to do this? Think how your practice is benefiting your elder self of the future.
