Ensuring we are in a parasympathetic state of rest and digest majority of the time allows the body to function optimally. When we are in a constant fight or flight mode (something that is very common in this day and age), the body is focusing a lot of its resources on keeping us alert and prepared to run from a perceived threat. The kicker here is that it cannot tell the difference between a real physical threat like a tiger chasing you, from the stress you feel when you are juggling too many responsibilities and not enough time in your day.  This function within the body is truly amazing, and shows how adaptive we are as humans, but we want to make sure we are giving our mind and body the time to come back into harmony and feel grounded and safe. Taking a moment to do one or a few of these habits every day can cultivate a calmer, happier and healthier version of oneself.
