To grow long, healthy hair, we want to nourish our Kidneys, Spleen and Liver.
Blood contains the nutrients required to nourish our hair, and the smooth flow of Qi and Blood through the body will in turn nourish the scalp, supporting the health of our hair.
Our Spleen is responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption, while the Liver is responsible for storing and circulating Blood, as well as Qi. Disharmony within the Liver and/or Spleen system can lead to Blood and Qi deficiency or stagnation, which as we know can affect scalp and hair health. Chronic stress, hormonal imbalances and a diet that is not nutritionally supportive can all contribute to hair loss.
Then there are our Kidneys, which house our Jing Essence. Ancient Taoists considered long healthy hair to be a sign of strong Kidney Jing, which supports hair growth and also controls our hair colour. Those with a 'deficiency' of Jing may experience slow and gradual hair loss, the growth of more grey/white hair and brittleness.
