17.6 BILLION pounds of plastic gets dumped into the ocean EACH year — that’s the equivalent of 57,000 blue whales. By 2050, at this rate, ocean plastics will outweigh ALL of the ocean’s fish!
What’s worse: the plastic gets broken down into microplastics over time due to sun exposure and wave action — and then it finds its way into the food chain.
Not only does it lead to increased acidity of ocean water (which threatens biodiversity and sea life, especially reefs and shelled organisms), this also contributes to the approximate 5 grams of plastic that we, humans, consume weekly (that’s about the size of a credit card).
