The Fibonacci spiral gained its name from the medieval mathematician, Leonardo of Pisa, who first introduced the concept to Western Europe in 1202. This sequence of numbers have subsequently been found in innumerable settings specifically in nature where examples include an uncurling fern and the arrangement of a pine cone.
