Let’s start with what is circadian rhythm? Our internal 24-hour clock based off the natural light of the sun and moon that regulates cycles of alertness and sleepiness by responding to light changes in our environment. Now, what does that have to do with my skin? Well, funny you ask. Circadian rhythms are robustly present in the skin, an organ that directly experiences variations in UV radiation throughout the day. UV radiation whether it’d be from the sun or blue lights (your phone, computer, television etc) affects your circadian rhythm. There has been lots of research done on how your sleep can affect the aging of your skin. Too much light at the wrong times decrease your body ability to produce the necessary sleep hormone melatonin. What can I do? For starters, limiting the amount of artificial light you receive when you wake up and before you go to bed has the biggest impact. it’s useful to use a red or dimmed lights when completing your night routine. Also, in the morning try to let sunlight be the first lights your eyes see instead of reaching for your phone. If you have any further questions, we are here to help! Leave a comment below.
