Remodeling a kitchen can be stressful. Aside from the cost and the inconvenience, there are so many decisions to make. Should you go classic or trendy? Will your kitchen look dated in five years? Should you choose quartz, quartzite, marble or granite for the countertop? Should the cabinets be all one color or should you mix and match? There is no one size fits all answer, and what is right for your neighbor or your friend may not be right for you. That’s why, (if I haven’t totally scared you off from remodeling your kitchen), you should consider talking to an experienced interior designer before you take those first steps. Even a decision like grout color can completely change the overall look of the design.
In this kitchen, for example, I chose a textured tile backsplash and had it installed in a herringbone pattern. Why? Texture adds interest to a tone on tone palette. I didn’t want this detail to smack you in the face or overpower the kitchen, so I went with a white grout that blends with the tile.
We went with an oak island and off-white cabinets. Why? We wanted to provide contrast while maintaining a bright and airy feel and the oak ties in with the floors.
Working with a designer not only can save you from making costly mistakes, but it can help you understand why certain decisions are made and what works best for your space.
