The paint layer on a golf ball is about much more than aesthetics. ⬇️
An inconsistent application – with a disparity of even just 2/10,000ths of an inch – can significantly impact performance.
To put it in perspective that’s the size of a red blood cell.
Mike Madson, VP of Titleist Golf Ball R&D notes, “If you apply the paint too thick or too thin, it’s going to change the flight you expect. And even worse, if the paint is applied differently on one half of the golf ball than the other you can start to get a left and right phenomenon as much as 30 or 40 yards offline purely from the aerodynamic changes in the side-to-side forces.”
