Beginner friendly backpacking trip in Joshua Tree National Park. 🏕️
Did you know that you can backpack in Joshua Tree for just $6? 👀
Spring is one of the best times of year to visit Joshua Tree National Park, and backpacking is a unique and fun way to experience the national park! If you’re planing a trip to the desert, you’ll want to have this trail on your radar. ⤵️🌵
Last April we backpacked the Boy Scout Trail during a 4-day trip to Joshua Tree. We spent a night under the stars surrounded by the park’s dramatic boulders and cacti. We saw tons of wildflowers (peep the foreground in 📸 8), and drank our morning coffee while watching the sun rise over the desert. 🌌
The best part about the Boy Scout Trail is that it’s a beginner friendly backpacking route. There are 14 designated backpacking sites (many of which are only a flat one mile hike in), and permits are just $6. That makes backpacking a great option for budget travelers looking to stay in the park, since regular campsites are $30+ per night.
🧡 SAVE this spring backpacking inspiration, and SEND it to a friend who would love camping in Joshua Tree!

⚠️ Note: if you backpack this trail you should bring rodent-proof food storage. We brought a bearvault to keep critters at bay. You’ll also need to pack in all your water, since there isn’t any along the trail.🍪
We actually did our first backpacking trip of the 2025 season this weekend! It was in Washington, so it was a bit wet and chilly… but still fun! 💦
Would you rather backpack, glamp, or stay in a hotel? 👇🏼✨
