The seeds of Earth Day began in Santa Barbara in 1969, following a massive oil spill off the coast, which jumpstarted the modern environmental movement, and led to the establishment under Richard Nixon of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air Act. And so it’s a fitting place to hold the annual retreat of the nonprofit board I sit on—the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund.
We visioned, we wondered, we noodled, we schemed on how we can better work with travelers and travel-affiliated companies and organizations to support nature and the communities stewarding them.
The ATCF is small, made up almost entirely of volunteers. In six years we have awarded more than $600,000 in grants to 33 projects around the world. We can do more, but cannot do it alone. Many of you are already part of this effort. If you’re not, join us! Ask me how.
