The city of Venice rests on 118 islands separated by 150 canals. The 16ft-deep Venice Grand Canal in Venice has over 170 buildings built along its two-and-a-half-mile length. Most of the buildings on the Grand Canal were built between the 13th and 18th century and most open directly onto the canal, making their fronts accessible only by boat.
