What’s something that you never owned in the past and now you embrace?
“Being a Muslim woman in America is not easy. Publicly embracing every aspect of our religious identity can be even harder.
Praying in public when the time came was something I struggled with, and I found myself delaying my prayer because I was afraid of how others would perceive me.
But, I decided to face this uneasiness head on. I began praying in public with my husband a few years ago, despite the fear of my surroundings and inability to fully concentrate on my salah.
My motivation stemmed from being tired of being afraid, tired of concealing my Muslim identity. This feeling is what fueled me to keep looking for the confidence to pray outside.
As I continued to pray in public places, I finally began to breathe, I was able to exist without fear, and most importantly, I was able to please Allah while also enjoying the pleasures of life.”
