r e f l e c t i o n s • Somewhere along the way, we learnt to use our energy and words to manipulate situations. As children when we didn't get what we wanted, we tantrum. And as we grow into (and with) the world we learn to use our energy to ensure that we get what we need. Enter a time of mass consumerism and large corporations, and we as consumers are becoming disconnected, entitled and ignorant. So then when we deal with smaller businesses, we speak to them in the same tone and expect the same immediate, one sided outcome. We've been taught that 'customers' are always right, which if we get truthful, we know is not (always) correct. But it comes down to power and energy. Sometimes when I am involved in this type of prickly interaction as a small business, I feel like I'm not 'tough' enough for this game. I take it personally. BUT then, very quickly I recognise the behaviour that I too have in me and I'm humbled to be 'reminded' of how I hope to consistently interact with others. We all want to 'support local, shop small' but we still have the same 24hr postage, free returns, instant reply, 'customer always right regardless' expectations. But shopping small (business) means interacting with REAL humans. Next time you (and I) go to loose my shit over something menial, remember this.... Kindness will always lead to a better solution ? #keepingourselvesincheck #violetgraydesign
