Well, Cashmere is considered to be the 'diamond' among fibers - known to be the softest, most luxurious and the best pashm (wool) in the world..
Cashmere is also known as Pashmina (the local / indigenous word) hence the double name. It comes from the underbelly of goats - a very short inner coat of hair. The hair is 16 microns, comparing to a human hair strand which is roughly 200 microns in size.
