So why 14k gold for all Violet Gray rings?
In my opinion, 14k gold represents the sweet spot in metal (karat) choices. It provides the best balance of practicality, economics (value for money) and aesthetics.
It’s 58.3% gold and 41.7% alloy.
In essence, the chemical composition is made up of 14 parts gold and 10 parts alloy. Pure gold is very soft and this is why it is mixed with other metals... otherwise your ring would scratch, dint or warp very easily.
This higher % of alloy means that it is ::
⇸ It is more hardy and durable (stronger and less likely to bend, especially when making finer shanks (ring bands).
⇸ It is more affordable (ie. than 18kt or 22kt).
⇸ It has a really beautiful softer yellow tone (a less saturated gold hue) due to the gold vs alloy ratio.
These pieces are intended to be future heirlooms - to last through generations of continued wear, a title that can’t really be applied to gold plated / filled or wrapped jewels.
When you can, always invest in the highest quality that you can afford... even when this means waiting and saving until the right moment presents itself 💫
