Besides being incredibly fun to float down, fish on, swim in and listen to, rivers play a critical role in our ecosystem. As water precipitates from the atmosphere as rain, sleet and snow, it flows to lower elevations due to the gravitation pull of Earth. At first these flows are small, taking the form of unintimidating streams, brooks and creeks. Almost defying the Law of Entropy, these many small conduits eventually join forces, forming larger and more powerful bodies of water. As they reach the ocean, the mighty rivers of the world carry over 100,000 cubic kilometers of fresh water. This may sound like a lot, but it's less than 0.5% of all the world's fresh water! Most of our fresh water (70%) is frozen as ice and snow!
