Every week we ask you to help us #spreadthelust (STL) and get more people stoked about having a Waterlust state of mind. This week's contest is focused on the theme "green"
While 71% of the earth’s surface is blue, a lot of the rest is green! Plants are important for our air, water, climate, food, habitat, and even medicine. While there are many plants that have a tough time growing too close to the ocean, some plants, like mangroves, are salt-tolerant. Mangroves thrive in salty environments because they are able to obtain freshwater from saltwater. The forests they form are incredibly important as habitat for many different species, particularly in the early stages of their life stages. They also help stabilize sediment and protect the coastlines form large waves and storms.
Today, however, less than half of the world’s original mangrove forest cover remains, mostly due to human impact.
This week, we want you to submit photos of plants near water. Show us the blue and the green!
This week's winner gets tons of positive karma along with having their work showcased on our social media outlets. All entries must be submitted between now and Monday, June 2nd, at 12pm EST. They must contain the hashtags #STLgreen and #Waterlust to be eligible. Official rules are published at www.waterlust.org
