Every week we ask you to help us #spreadthelust (STL) and get more people stoked about having a Waterlust state of mind. This week's contest is focused on the theme "silhouette"
While silhouettes lack detail, they can convey a powerful, dramatic visual message, both in photos and in day to day life for our ocean’s inhabitants. In the ocean, as light filters down from above through the water column, animals are visible mostly by their silhouettes. These striking forms can give away the presence of a large predator, or indicate prey, for example a great white shark reacting to the shape of a seal at the surface. Many marine animals have developed counter shading to help hide their silhouettes, where they are darker on their dorsal (top) side and lighter on their ventral (bottom) side. The pony fish, a small family of fish in the subtropical Indo-Pacific region, have taken this adaptation even further with the presence of a luminous organ that can emit light from a broad area of it’s ventral surface during the daytime, matching the sunlight above and obscuring it’s own silhouette.
This week we want you to show us the silhouettes that you can capture, in all their glory. Take advantage of how the sunlight beams down into the ocean from above, or the light during sunset, and get creative! (Also, make sure to spell silhouette right - it’s a tough one!) This week's winner gets tons of positive karma along with having their work showcased on our social media outlets. All entries must be submitted between now and Monday, January 27th, at 12pm EST.
