Every week we ask you to help us #spreadthelust (STL) and get more people stoked about having a Waterlust state of mind. This week's contest is focused on the theme "costume"
Ocean critters like to play dress up more than you would think. Some animals, like octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish, can change color constantly. They do so in response to physical or chemical stimuli, and can even change hues to match their moods! This process (aka fancy camo outfit) is called physiological color change or metachrosis.
Crabs, on the other hand, are the thriftiest of them all! Hermit crabs continue to change costumes as they grow, living in a series of discarded shells. The decorator crab isn’t born with a costume either: It makes one. These crabs covers their body with seaweed, sponges, and even tiny marine animals to better blend into their environment
This week we want you to showcase your best marine themed costumes! Get creative and have a fun, safe Halloween!
This week's winner gets tons of positive karma along with having their work showcased on our social media outlets. All entries must be submitted between now and November 4, at 12pm EST. They must contain the hashtags #STLcostume and #Waterlust to be eligible. Official rules are published at www.waterlust.org
